Businesses 'need to train workers for effective unified communications'

For businesses to effectively uptake VoIP services and unified communications more multi-skilled workers are needed.

According to a survey by Psytechnics, the benefits of unified communications cannot be fully realised unless staff are trained in the technology, reports ComputerWeekly.

Of the 100 professionals surveyed, nearly three-quarters said employees need to be skilled in both networks and voice and video applications.

The website also reports that 60 per cent of unified communications specialists do not think there are currently enough expert staff to meet demand for services.

Anthony Finbow, the chief executive officer of the firm, said: "Employing the right experience management tools will help to offset staff costs and skills shortages, but it's up to the communications industry to ensure enterprises are fully equipped."

He added that the survey should act "as a wake-up call" for people in the industry, who are relying on IP communications.

Vincent Potier, a VoIP specialist, said more businesses need to realise the cost savings involved in VoIP services and adopt them.
