Small firms 'want unified comms'

A new study has found that the number of smaller businesses looking to adopt unified communications is rising dramatically.

There were 18.4 million IP telephony deployments with fewer than 100 lines connected in 2007, analyst firm Canalys reports.

Europe accounted for 60 per cent of those installations, while the majority of the remaining 40 per cent were found in North America, Computer Weekly notes.

According to Matthew Ball, analyst at the firm, small companies can look to significantly improve productivity and lower the costs of telecoms.

"These are benefits every small business needs at any stage of its life, but they are particularly critical during the challenging economic times in which companies are operating today," Mr Ball commented.

Industry commentator Larry Hettick has also noted the current business focus on unified communications.

Reporting on online resource Network World, he asserts that unified communications were top of the agenda at the recent CTIA Wireless annual trade expo.
