2008: the year that unified comms 'takes off'

This year will see the unified communications markets balloon in both popularity and product development, according to ZDnet Asia.

One assertion made by the industry website is that 2008 will be the year that the market moves away from small proofs of concept to fully-established large scale deployments capable of delivering full functionality to a wide variety of businesses.

Analyst Robert Le Busque asserted that as the technology develops, more firms will be ready to "take the plunge" and adopt converged communications strategies.

"In 2007, vendors were beefing up their unified communications portfolio, hence many customers were either trialing the product or had adopted a wait-and-watch approach," added IDC research manager Shalini Verma.

A recent report by analysis firm Datamonitor predicts that the industry will experience a compound annual growth rate of around 20 per cent this year.

The firm defines unified communications as the ability to manage all voice and data requirements through one portal - whether that be email, fax, voice mail, or instant messaging.
