UK firms 'waste £1bn a year on telecoms'

Businesses in the UK are spending a total of £1 billion over the odds for their telecoms service every year, it has been highlighted by IT Week.

The magazine for technology professionals reported the estimated figures from analyst the Yankee Group and pointed out that telecoms expense management (TEM) has "proved so popular in the US".

Matt Atkinson, the managing director of Aurora Kendrick James, claimed in the magazine that "three quarters of UK companies do not even have a telecoms policy in place" and suggested that "UK businesses are throwing money away by not paying attention to how they procure, consume and manage telecoms services".

Mr Atkinson noted that an audit of the firm's network is an important first step in finding areas where savings can be made on telecoms charges.

"Many companies still have ISDN lines incurring rental charges, but carrying no traffic as they have switched to broadband and other internet-based transfers," he said.

While this may be one of the simpler TEM checks to make, Mr Atkinson added that it can increase in sophistication as needed and noted that "as the telecoms world gets ever more complex, the potential for waste or savings is increasing all the time".
