Telecoms competition 'pushing prices down'

Competition in the UK telecoms industry is continuing to bring excellent value deals to market which is forcing prices down, according to industry regulator Ofcom.

The industry regulator praised BT for its work in local loop unbundling, which opens up opportunities to its rivals .

Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards said that the former telecoms monopoly has "made a very real contribution to the development of the UK telecoms market".

He added that "the UK now one of the most competitive markets anywhere in the world".

According to the Ofcom research, BT's Openreach department has improved the openness of the BT network to telecoms firms looking to launch a voice service of their own.

This has pushed the cost of services down, with 8Mb broadband services dropping in price by around £20 a month between 2005 and 2006.

As companies fight for the attention of consumers and businesses, they continue to bring cheaper deals to the market.

But navigating through the myriad options could prove too time-consuming for busy firms, who may consider getting a telecoms audit or using management service in order to receive the best deals on their communications.
