Telecoms 'boom' predicted

The telecoms market could be set for increased competition as emerging market drive technology advances, it has been suggested.

Communications firms in Brazil, India, Russia and China (known collectively as the Bric countries) have been rapidly increasing their influence and since 2001 have accounted for 40 per cent of the world's total new mobile phone subscriptions.

And with half the world's population living in the Bric market, these firms are likely to become increasingly important on the world stage, according to Ofcom.

The UK telecoms industry regulator reported that these countries will not have to play catch up with the West in terms of technology as they are not restricted by older systems and so can simply install top of the range hardware at ground level in their landline systems.

Ofcom suggested that innovation in telecoms technology will likely be boosted when this is coupled with the large populations in Bric, as newer firms compete with established multinationals for supremacy in these largely untapped countries.
