Gartner offers technology predictions

Industry analyst Gartner has offered its top ten predictions for the future - and there are some revelations that will interest business communications strategists.

The report aims to highlight areas where executives and IT professionals need to take action in 2008 and marks a trend toward increasing mobility in business communications.

It predicts that by 2012, 50 per cent of mobile workers will communicate using devices other than laptops, favouring devices such as VoIP phones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs).

Businesses are advised that while laptops shrink in size and weight, many workers prefer powerful applications that are easily pocketable.

Increasingly, "vendors are developing solutions to address these concerns", the analyst states.

It also asserts that by 2011, communications-dependent businesses will opt for off-site data hosting, freeing firms from the need to continually upgrade network infrastructure and purchasing their network solutions as a managed service instead.

Both claims find validation from analyst ZDNet, although it offers a caveat that it will be a while longer before small businesses adopt a managed network service.
