Survey unveils IT retail spending trends

Retail firms have retained store operations as their main IT spending priority, according to the latest figures.

A survey of 100 British retailers by consultancy firm Martec International shows almost a quarter of respondents cite store operations as paramount, while merchandising has increased from seven to 12 per cent in the last year and e-commerce operations now account for nine per cent, reports Computer Weekly UK.

Overall, UK retail IT spending remained at 1.3 per cent of annual sales, although willingness to invest in operational efficiencies and getting more of the right product to the right customer at the right time is noted by the study.

The report stated: "For most retailers the investment in store systems is due to an electronic point of sale replacement project but others are adding mobile technology in-store or systems to better improve the customer experience with mobile tills and enhanced functionality."

Martec International claims to have been helping vendors execute market strategies for 20 years.
