Managed telecoms pays off for hospital

A US-based hospital has cut its outgoings and streamlined its communications after undergoing a telecoms expense management audit, it has been reported.

One hospital in DuPage county, Illinois was receiving 120 separate phone bills for calls made throughout the medical complex and its attached clinics and surgeries, the Chicago Tribune reports.

"It was an accounting nightmare," claims Bill Capraro, who helped conduct the telecoms audit that helped to transform the hospital's communications infrastructure.

The consultancy identified bills for long redundant telephone lines and the process of unifying the organisation's voice communications saved the hospital $30,000 (£15,400).

It has since developed a unified communications system which allows it to combine voice, data and video services throughout the expansive hospital complex.

A recent analyst has supported the use of unified communications systems in industry areas where connectivity is crucial.

Converged services solve the problem of making the "choice of juggling multiple communications devices or potentially missing critical calls", argues John Edwards on CIO.com
