Enterprise network management options explained

The importance of enterprise network management has been highlighted by an expert.

Writing on TMCnet, executive editor at IP Communications Group Richard Grigonis said the increasing complexity of business networks means that management now incorporates a number of areas, such as configuration and telecom expense management.

He pointed out the traditional "data-centric view" of a network allows managers to understand the status of a network and any devices on it, but does not provide help for those with VoIP or converged solutions.

Mr Grigonis claims that administrators using these technologies should use management software which provides them with a "VoIP view" of the system, letting them see IP telephony components such as call servers, signaling servers, gateways and handsets.

The expert also claimed those looking to undertake activities such as telecom expense management can use a "converged view".

He wrote: "This view - also called the physical view - includes the VoIP system components, IP phones, the data infrastructure (switches, routers, subnets), as well as the physical connectivity between the devices."

Last week, Network World claimed companies consider how they intend to manage an IP telephony system ahead of its deployment, in order to reduce potential problems.
