Better approach needed to telecoms expense management, report says

Making blanket cuts is too simplistic a form of telecoms expense management and a better approach is needed, it has been claimed.

A report by business and IT analysis firm Quocirca said companies have to move beyond the "mechanistic processing of bills".

With mobile, voice and data communications now increasingly impacting on budgets, it said value for money rather than cheapness should be strived for.

In its key findings, Quocirca's report stated cutting business communications costs can lead to a "blinkered view" and added reducing expensive line item does not necessarily translate to lower organisational costs.

Consolidating bills may better reflect the bigger picture, while mobile communications should always be accounted for.

A lack of resources is the main challenge to telecoms expense management, the report surmises.

Cutting costs equally across centres is also "blind panic" and "rarely effective", Rob Bamforth, a principal analyst for Quocirca told IT Director.

Mixing utilities to best suit each individual company is the most effective form of telecoms expense management, he said.
