Telecoms 'ahead in environmental concerns'

The telecommunications industry is ahead of other sectors in terms of environmental issues, according to an expert. Chris Green, editor of business communications publication IT PRO, said the early adoption of emerging technologies in its data centres and contact centres is one of the reasons behind this. He pointed to the example of blade servers, which operate with reduced power consumption, and noted that the telecommunications sector was among the first to deploy them. Mr Green added: "The telecoms sector has effectively been the leader in overhauling things like their IT for environmental benefits. "The telecoms market is probably two or three years ahead of everyone else in this respect." He also said the industry is using measures such electronic billing to further reduce its impact on the environment. Research from Netregs suggested electrical and electronic waste has become the fastest growing waste stream in Britain, with an estimated 1.8 million tonnes created every year.
