Security 'important when choosing telecommunications system'

Companies should look for providers with adequate security, firewalls and encryption codes when choosing a telecommunications system, it has been recommended. Paul Lopez, a lawyer who heads the labour and employment department for US-based Tripp Scott, told theledger.com protecting confidential company information is important across all platforms, including email, instant messaging, texting and VoIP. Care should also be taken when employees are remote working and it is suggested that home workers be supplied with external hard drives and the necessary firewall, antivirus and spam facilities to protect the business. He said this is a good investment for companies as it covers them for liability. Mr Lopez explained: "It's the employer who will be in the hot seat if the information is somehow revealed." It was revealed recently that smartphones have also been subject to security threats. Many of the 800,000 mobile devices stolen in the UK in 2006 are believed to have been smartphones, putting company and personal data such as security information, passwords and bank account details at risk.
