Onshoring 'has advantages for nation'

Studies have suggested use of onshoring rather that outsourcing work overseas can have benefits, it has emerged. Research from the CGI Coalition for Mission Results said outsourcing to onshore firms can have advantages for the national economy, such as job creation, especially in rural areas, while clients have their business needs better met, according to Marketwatch, The studies looked at figures from the US which found companies that practice onshoring in mid-sized cities and rural areas can experience savings of 30 per cent, while the cost reductions for outsourcing overseas were reported to be 20 per cent in some cases. In addition, the report also claimed security could be improved by basing IT services in the home country, as data will not be transported across national borders. Donna Morea, president of CGI US, told the news provider: "Information technology is our newest national resource. High quality jobs with proximity to clients create enhanced productivity and value for all of our stakeholders while supporting our rural communities across the country." Earlier this year, the Information Technology Association of America suggested more use of onshoring could allow firms to tap the IT skills found in their own countries, according to NetworkWorld.
