IT security 'should help not hinder'

IT security measures should be viewed as a way to help a business not impede it operations, it has been claimed. According to IT analyst Gartner, some firms can believe that access to the internet or using wireless network solutions can leave them open to security risks such as data breaches. However, the company points out that developing a framework that lays out an understood, managed and accepted risk profile allows businesses to use the technologies to improve their activities without placing themselves at risk. Andrew Walls, Gartner security, privacy and risk analyst, comments: "Security has been beaten into submission over the last few years by being accused of always saying 'no' and preventing the business from aggressive change and innovation." Mr Mills adds that businesses need to reassess the solution and put it in its correct place, which involves setting realistic performance targets and focus on business, not security, issues. Last week, Gartner claimed that firms implementing network solutions and business communications are often confused by the issues surrounding green IT.
