Doctor debacle prompts data security criticism

The Department of Health (DoH) is in the firing line after a review of its role in this summer's junior doctor training fiasco. Moves to streamline the application system for doctor training placements around the country led to a website being set up to allow the process to be managed online. But a flaw in the system led to a major breach of data security where private information about the applicants was viewable to all site visitors. "This is an unacceptable breach of security. Organisations must ensure that the personal information they hold on us is secure – this is an important principle of the Data Protection Act," said Information Commissioner's Office assistant commissioner Mick Gorrill. "It is essential that the Department of Health takes the appropriate measures that we have outlined to protect individuals' personal information." This follows major data privacy breaches at HM Revenue and Customs and the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency, which have increased scrutiny of information protection practices.
