BCC calls on Govt and ISPs to pay for broadband upgrade

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has urged the government and ISPs to foot the bill for a broadband infrastructure upgrade as online video usage increases.

In a Channel 4 news report, David Frost, director general of the BCC, said: "It is clear that the internet is currently slowing down because of increased demand. The system needs to be upgraded, whether that is by the service providers or government."

He added that it is imperative the money must be found for the improvements or "the harm to the economy will be very substantial indeed".

The news comes as it was revealed at a Westminster eForum that major investment in infrastructure is needed to ensure the Internet does not reach its limit.

During the forum, Jim Cicconi, vice president of legislative affairs at AT&T said that $130 billion (£66 billion) would be required to improve the worldwide network and cope with growing demand.
