Analyst predicts 'PC innovation'

Product innovation in the PC market is expected in the next few years, with mini-notebooks likely to be a new development which could appeal to business users, according to new analysis.

Industry research firm Gartner claims the devices are likely to fall in price by between ten and 15 per cent over the next two to three years as a result of increasing demand and lower component prices.

The organisation predicts mini-notebooks will emerge strongly in the business sector, while cautioning they will need to be positioned as a window to internet usage rather than solely as a computer.

Annette Jump, research director at Gartner, says questions over availability, hardware specifications, internet connection costs and power availability need to be resolved.

However, she adds: "Mini-notebooks will create opportunities to reach many buyers across all regions, both in mature markets as additional devices and in emerging markets as PCs."

A recent study by Gartner argued an understanding of technology needs to be delivered urgently for companies to reduce costs and improve operating efficiency.

It will play a crucial role in helping chief financial officers drive business growth, the organisation claimed.
