UK ready for next-gen internet

The UK is ready to start rolling out the next generation of high-speed internet infrastructure, an expert has claimed.

Edd Dawson, managing director of broadband.co.uk, pointed out that the current copper network has limitations and has resulted in some users achieving less than average connection speeds.

He explained: "There is only so far that speeds over copper wire can be pushed, at some point a replacement is required.

"Fundamentally, the UK needs to start moving to the next level soon."

Mr Dawson also suggested that the recent fall in download and connection speeds could be due to the increased use of media streaming, which eats up bandwidth.

According to the UK Broadband Speedtest Results October 2008, the average download speed was 3.325Mbps, which is the third decline experienced since July's average of 3.609Mbps.

The study found overnight levels have a higher speed than the peak evening period, with daytime connections falling somewhere between the two.
