IT outsourcing 'useful in recession'

With the onset of recession hitting the UK, a research firm has advised firms to take care when adopting a strategy for IT investment. Equaterra claims the current uncertain economic climate will mean companies will turn to IT outsourcing in order to modernise and reduce their costs. In advice which may interest those considering deploying a unified communications solution, the organisation suggests carrying out these operations in-house could be inefficient. The group explains: "Consider outsourcing to modernise or upgrade IT infrastructure and to deploy new applications, thereby avoiding upfront capital expenditures and having to employ staff for ongoing maintenance." Other recommendations include carrying out an immediate assessment of IT investment to analyse their value and prioritising programmes after discovering what is most important to key stakeholders in the business. Last week, Microsoft chief information officer Tony Scott suggested unified communications is a useful tool for companies as it can cut down on administrative workload.
