IT outsourcing benefits highlighted

Using IT outsourcing services can result in benefits for businesses such as reduced costs, it has been claimed.

Andy Dillon, writing in the Birmingham Post, reveals that many firms still base the IT services in-house, cutting themselves off from the benefits that outsourcing could provide.

Mr Dillion cites research from Computer Weekly, published earlier in the year, which found the average salary of an IT professional is £34,217 and claims the same services could be obtained at a lower cost if an external supplier was used.

In addition, the article suggests by using an IT outsourcing firm businesses can gain access to expertise and knowledge which would not be present in their own smaller in-house department.

Mr Dillion also writes: "There are also efficiency savings, as external IT support companies are extremely responsive, often available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and are likely to offer a broader range of expertise than that offered by one person."

He also claims that as the credit crunch increasingly impacts on companies' finances, they will have to become more focussed on issues such as efficiency and cost reductions.

Earlier this week, Martyn Hart, chairman of the National Outsourcing Association, wrote on silicon.com that use of IT outsourcing can have ecological benefits, as many firms in the sector are working to improve their green credentials.
