IT outsourcing 'can be eco-friendly'

Environmental benefits could result from IT outsourcing as well as business gains, it has been claimed.

Martyn Hart, chairman of the National Outsourcing Association, wrote on silicon.com that many outsourcing companies are attempting to adopt green approaches.

He suggested this is because government guidelines have encouraged them to examine environmental sustainability when making procurement decisions, meaning they tend to adopt outsourcing firms with eco-friendly credentials.

In addition, Mr Hart writes on the website: "Outsourcing your data centre may be more cost effective because suppliers have access to more efficient data centre technology and can access economies of scale, for instance."

He also said firms should develop a clear strategy concerning sustainability when looking to outsource, as well as defining their requirements and managing performance.

Furthermore, the expert also predicted wider change will be seen in the industry following legislation which sets green obligations for companies.

Recently, analyst Gartner said administrators could experience confusion over how to deploy their resources when looking to introduce green IT into an organisation.
