IT budgets 'to fall this year'

Budget growth expectations for IT are significantly down on a year-on-year basis, research suggests.

Investment firm Goldman Sachs polled 100 large business IT managers in its 41st monthly spending survey, which forecasts IT spending to decline in the coming year, ITPro.co.uk reports.

Contractors, hardware sales and professional services are likely to be hardest hit by the credit crunch, which will see IT spending fall from seven per cent in 2007 to five per cent of overall technology capital expenditure this year.

According to the report, many chief information officers (CIOs) are looking to cut temporary staff as their first resort.

Services such as server consolidation, virtualisation and VoIP remain high on the list of IT spending priorities as they provide increased efficiency, the website states.

Recent research from CIO Connect found IT managers are preparing themselves for tough times, with many (59 per cent) predicting their budgets will be cut over the next 12 to 18 months.

Some 80 per cent of those polled by the organisation think they will be asked to provide better value, while 71 per cent think they will be asked to contain costs.
