'Number of PCs to double by 2014'

The number of PCs installed around the globe is expected to surpass two billion by 2014, new research suggests.

IT analyst Gartner estimated that the worldwide installed base of PCs is currently growing at just under 12 per cent every year, remaining heavily concentrated in mature markets.

Emerging markets, however, are predicted to claim an increasingly share of the world's installed base, with rapidly rising PC penetration continuing to drive strong double-digit PC growth in these areas.

"Mature markets such as the US, western Europe and Japan currently account for 58 per cent of the world's installed PCs, but these markets only account for 15 per cent of the world's population," observed George Shiffler, research director at Gartner.

He continued: "Rapid penetration in emerging markets is being driven by the explosive expansion of broadband and wireless connectivity in these markets, the continuing fall in PC average selling prices and the general realisation that PCs are an indispensable tool for advancement."

The installed base of PCs is defined by Gartner as the estimated number of PCs in use, rather than the quantity shipped over a given period.
