SMBs increasing investment in IT

Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are making greater use of IT services and increasing their spending on maintaining their systems and embracing new solutions, a new survey shows.

With innovations such as VoIP services and IP PBX networks changing how companies communicate, research from Access Markets International (AMI) found that the amount spent by SMBs on IT has risen by eight per cent year-on-year to 2007.

This amounted to a £6.07 billion total spend for 2007 by SMBs on new computing solutions, software upgrades, networking support and other professional IT services.

AMI analyst Jacqueline Atkinson explained that the increase was "not surprising, as companies need to support business operations and manage their IT infrastructures with an ever-increasing range of IT products and services".

However, she added that the results highlighted how the range of IT services used by SMBs is increasing to cover networking solutions and data security options - even though just one in three small businesses in the UK has a dedicated IT department.
