Demand for IT pros at 6-year high

New research has shown that demand for IT professionals is at its highest level in six years, with average salaries growing £100 per week since 2002.

In the final quarter of 2007 alone, demand for ICT workers rose by seven per cent, reportedly spurred by increased corporate investment in IT.

"We believe it's increased business investment to try to get competitive advantage," ITpro.co.uk reported Jeff Brooks of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation as saying. "We're not surprised at demand, but are always looking for flattening out."

Advertised salaries for permanent staff in the ICT sector - which employs about one million people - rose three per cent in Q4 2007 to an average of £40,300, while wages for contract staff spiked two per cent to £67,100.

Meanwhile, the ratio of existing staff to job vacancies fell dramatically from 15:1 in 2003 to just 5:1 today - meaning IT professionals now have greater choice than ever before when weighing up job openings.

"Five to one is a real stretch ... For every one job, just five people can do it," commented Mr Brooks, adding that the job sector should expect to feel the strain of such a tight market.
