2012 Olympic Games to use innovative communications technology

The London 2012 Olympic Games will see the deployment of communications technologies such as IP telephony, it has been revealed.

According to ComputerWeekly.com, internet protocol television, Web 2.0 and internet-enabled mobile phones will be used to increase access to the Games.

Delegates at the Westminster eForum which examined the use of technology in the event said the IT networks for the Olympics will be created by experienced professionals.

Stuart Hill, BT's vice-president of the London 2012 delivery programme, said the 2012 Olympics will see a roll-out of "industrial-strength services", the news provider reports.

In addition, Ben Gallop, head of interactive at BBC Sport, revealed the use of internet protocol television and fixed and mobile broadband will allow the organisation to better broadcast the event.

Mr Gallop said: "I think it's worth remembering why London got this bid in the first place. It's all about making the Olympics accessible, and we plan to use a range of technology to achieve this."

Last month, London mayor Boris Johnson called on the capital to become a "Wi-Fi city" ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games.

Mr Johnson said London could establish a city-wide mobile and data communications network, according to silicon.com.
