System design 'can affect carbon output'

Making use of IT data or communications systems which have been developed with their environmental impact in mind can help ensure that firms do their part of help the environment, it has been suggested.

According to the Hugh Jones, a product manager for government-backed environmental group Carbon Trust, called on firms to consider their emissions from IT devices early on in the process of installing a new network.

"The important part of making IT more efficient is the design process," he said.

"We want designers to factor in the full life-time footprint of equipment and efforts should be made to try to reduce this in future designs."

This follows research by Carbon Trust that IT systems worldwide account for around two per cent of carbon emissions, roughly equivalent to the output of the airline industry.

Although Mr Jones admitted that already-installed systems may be too critical to a business to tamper with, he called on firms to "factor in the carbon footprint as part of the decision-making process – for example, if the footprint of a new server is significant, the business should really think about it".
