5m expected to take part in remote working day

Around five million people are expected to be remote working on Thursday to mark National Work from Home Day.

The "day of action" follows new research from the Trade Unions Congress (TUC), which shows an increase of 600,000 in the number of home workers in the UK, vnunet.com reports.

Nearly 3.5 million people or 12.2 per cent of the population is now believed to be remote working on a regular basis, according to TUC figures.

People in the south-west of England are most likely to work from home, at 15.7 per cent, followed by those in the north-east of the country, at 14.4 per cent.

Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK, said it showed the advantages of working from home are now "universally accepted".

He added: "Not only does it reduce the amount of commuting people have to do, enhancing their work-life balance, but many are actually more productive."

According to Mr Flaxton, whose organisation is behind this week's event, the exercise could benefit people, companies and the environment.
