UK broadband services 'to get WiMax boost'

Wireless broadband services that cover a wide area are being brought to the UK to complement existing Wi-Fi connections, according to reports.

These services can spread a web connection up to three miles away from the source, far further than the 100 foot radius around Wi-Fi hubs.

This could offer firms more options for home working or connecting to the office while on the move, if these services spread to cover more remote areas of the country.

But suggestions that WiMax could take the place of Wi-Fi in the short-term were dismissed by the editor of thinkbroadband.com, Andrew Ferguson.

"[The] lack of built-in WiMax standard kit in laptops and other devices is probably holding things back," he said.

"Look at Wi-Fi, it has taken some years to become widely available and used - I suspect [WiMax] will co-exist rather than dominate."

Increasing business use of wireless broadband services has sparked the popularity of home working, with a recent Famatech survey finding that almost a quarter of employees would even take a pay cut if it meant they could work from home.
