Travel costs 'could push remote working'

The increasing cost of travel could cause more firms to adopt remote working, it has been suggested.

Writing on SME Web, vice president of European, Middle Eastern and African marketing at Blue Coat Systems Nigel Hawthorn says high fuel prices are affecting employees who have to commute and businesses which pay for nomadic workers' petrol.

He also points to forecasts which predict further price increases by the end of the year and suggests the introduction of remote working options could be a way to mitigate this.

Mr Hawthorn writes in the article: "From an HR perspective, the rise in more flexible work options is proving to be a major plus point in attracting, recruiting and retaining employees."

However, the expert advises companies considering the option to ensure remote workers have access to the same applications as their office-based colleagues, otherwise potential gains could be lost.

Recently, Maureen Rice, editor of the Psychologies magazine, suggested women's demands for a better work/life balance could lead to an increase in remote working.
