Technology drives home working

Remote working is a growing trend being spurred on by developments in technology, it has been claimed.

Virtual incubation, whereby businesses use the facilities of an "incubation centre" without the need for permanent space, is also on the rise, according to the National Federation of Enterprise Agencies (NFEA).

Improvements in business telecommunications, with developments in the internet, telecoms such as VoIP and IT capacity, has also seen an increase in the number of new business start-ups operating without the traditional office.

George Derbyshire, chief executive of the NFEA, said remote working is flexible and can save both employers and employees money.

He added: "A virtual office is not only a convenient service, with options including telephone answering, mailbox rental and fax and photocopying; a virtual office can also provide the appearance of a much larger organisation, whilst allowing a business owner to continue working from home or on the move."

Commentator Linda Wilson suggested recently that remote working can help businesses expand potential talent pools.

IT and telecommunications technology can also help attract and retain employees, she said.
