Remote working planning recommended

Companies should set out remote working plans to prepare for proposed changes to legislation on the practice, it has been recommended.

Doing so will enable businesses to retain staff and tempt other workers by offering people choices to suit their lifestyle, according to an article on zdnet.co.uk.

The proposals mean parents with children up to the age of 16 are set to be given the right to work outside the office.

Remote working is therefore expected to become available to an extra 4.5 million people and as many as seven million are expected to work from home by 2012, double the current number.

As many as seven million people are expected to be working from home in the UK by 2012, the website said, double the current level or remote working in the country.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development said last week the "allure" of remote working has been boosted recently by rising costs and stress levels.

Environmentally-friendly motives are also said to be a reason for increasing numbers wishing to work from home, as they can cut down on their carbon emissions by avoiding commuting to the office.
