Outsourcing 'tipped to increase'

Economic conditions such as the financial crisis and global recession will increase the amount of outsourcing firms take part in, it has been claimed.

The Global Outsourcing and Offshoring Trends for 2009 report, from advisory firm Equaterra, suggests companies will turn to the solution in order to reduce costs as business conditions tighten.

In the study, it is predicted wider factors such as the economic downturn and a new US administration could lead to a slowing of globalisation and, with it, a reliance on offshoring.

However, moves in the business climate will also see more firms use domestic outsourcing on a more long-term basis, with the better deals that can be negotiated for these arrangements being cited as a reason.

The research claims: "Organisations will also place greater emphasis on defining, acquiring and transferring skills needed to successfully govern outsourcing/offshoring efforts."

Previous research from Equaterra suggested IT outsourcing can be used by firms to lower their maintenance and upgrade costs during tough financial times.
