Identifying weak links 'is key to network security'

Establishing a secure network is all about identifying and addressing the weakest link, the author of a new book on the subject has stated.

Paul McFedries, writing in Networking with Microsoft Windows Vista, states that a multi-pronged approach is necessary to address the threats that are a feature of the modern business world.

"Your network is only as secure as the least secure network computer," he explains.

"All your security precautions are for naught if you have a computer on your network that uses a weak password ... or contains malware."

Mr McFedries goes on to explain that establishing secure data solutions is also problematic in that the systems must still be useable and allow the flexibility for effective use by workers, the Hindu Businessline reports.

Meanwhile, Eric Aarrestad, vice-president of marketing at WatchGuard, has associated the security challenges facing modern businesses with a change in the corporate environment.

Mobile workers, remote officers and new technologies were all identified as changes which challenge the limits of conventional approaches to sharing information.
