Gates predicts 'more connected' tech future

Even though he is stepping back from frontline duties at Microsoft, the firm's co-founder Bill Gates still has an eye on the future of technology.

Speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show currently underway in Las Vegas, the multi-billionaire suggested that 'cloud computing' is set to shake up the IT industry.

This refers to companies storing their data on third-party servers along with other firms and then accessing them securely over the web - either from the office or working remotely from home.

"People are very interested in a simpler way of navigating information," Mr Gates said.

"During the next digital decade, technology will make our lives richer, more connected, more productive and more fulfilling in profound and exciting way".

He added that continued innovation in the same vein as IP telephony and network solutions will see technology finally fulfil "so many dreams and promises made over the years".

Mr Gates is to step down from the chairmanship of Microsoft later this year to focus on work with his charity.

But he ensured his last ever keynote speech at the technology expo was a hit by jamming onstage to Xbox game Guitar Hero with rock legend Slash.
