English countryside suffering from 'lack of communication'

Rural England is suffering due to a lack of quality broadband and mobile communications connections, according to reports.

Parts of the English countryside have worse coverage than areas of India or Malawi, according to Stuart Burgess, chairman of the Rural Communities Commission and the government's Rural Advocate.

He explained that the issue is of extreme importance to British businesses, which are currently unable to operate due to telecommunications difficulties in the remote areas of the country.

Speaking to the Times, Mr Burgess said: "Broadband is still not accessible and, even where it is, the quality is questionable.

"For the modern rural economy to develop and grow you need good internet access. We also need to improve the mobile phone coverage."

He added that the issues need to be addressed by the government, especially as major communications companies seem unwilling to branch out.

"The current investment plans of the main [communications] providers indicate that many rural businesses and communities could find themselves left behind," he said.
