'Change needed' when using remote working

Companies should ensure they have the right procedures in place when they allow staff to carry out remote working, it has been suggested.

Tim Holden of human resources firm Fluid Consulting told hrzone.co.uk that increased use of technologies such as broadband, laptops and mobile communications devices has lead to a rise in remote working.

"With a growing awareness of work-life balance issues, the desire employees have to work flexibly, and the high price of commuting in terms of time and money, we believe that home working is likely to increase in the foreseeable future," the article explains.

However, it notes that in order to make the process work as best as possible, businesses take steps to avoid home workers putting in more hours than other employees, while rules around dress code and appearance may need to be re-evaluated.

In addition, job descriptions and person specifications will have to be amended to reflect the new working arrangements, while remote workers should maintain equal rights for union membership, the news provider reports.

The employee is also advised to contact the local authority, insurance provider and HM Revenue and Customs to see if remote working raises any issues with them.

Recently, research commissioned by Aastra found employees could save up to £174 if they worked from home one day a week over the festive period, onrec.com reports.
