Benefits of remote working touted

Business leaders have been reminded of the benefits of remote working during the region-wide Work Wise North East campaign.

Organisers of the event are focusing on smarter working practices in a bid to encourage the heads of public sector organisations to do more to meet the changing demands of an increasingly flexible workforce.

Representatives from local authorities, the prison service, pension service, Northumbria Police, Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service and Natural England all attended the government-backed event in Newcastle.

Jonathan Blackie, regional director of the Work Wise campaign, noted that around 50,000 people - almost five per cent of the working population - are currently based at or regularly working from home, potentially leading to significant financial and personal benefits.

"Even though many of us have flexible working policies, we are keen to see the wider benefits for our staff, the environment, the region and our budgets more actively promoted," he said.

In the north-east alone, the number of people remote working has grown by 56 per cent since 1999.
