Avoid common remote working mistakes

Companies must ensure they avoid common mistakes when introducing remote working to ensure they get the most out of the approach, it has been claimed.

According to Brandon Dempsey, vice-president of telecommuting specialist Suite Commute, many businesses attempt to implement remote working without setting any solid policies or procedures, Management-Issues reports.

In addition, firms need to examine whether this model of working is compatible with their business plan and carry out tests to see how the solution would work, the news provider suggests.

Mr Dempsey explained: "Companies should map out their business drivers and define the goals they want to achieve by implementing a virtual work option before implementing a telecommuting programme."

An additional error is failing to train managers to cope with the skills needed when their staff are involved in remote working, while using a pilot system may allow the transition to pass more smoothly.

Yesterday (September 30th), Nigel Hawthorn, vice president of European, Middle Eastern and African marketing at Blue Coat Systems, suggested increasing fuel costs could encourage more companies to introduce remote working, according to SME Web.
