'Allure of remote working' boosted

Rising costs and stress levels are boosting the "allure" of remote working, it has been claimed.

Gerwyn Davies, policy advisor at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), said employees, particularly young workers, are also looking to work for companies with "strong green credentials", including initiatives to cut down on commuting.

A survey by the CIPD indicates businesses are becoming increasingly receptive to the idea, with just under a third now accepting remote working requests.

In addition, of the organisations polled claimed their remote working staff are more productive than those based in the office.

"Employers and line managers should therefore have more confidence in their staff, policies and in their own management capability to ensure that they recruit, retain and make the best use of the talent they have," Mr Davies said.

Research by Gartner recently revealed 41.4 million people are expected to be remote working at least one day per week next year despite some opposition from those who prefer face-to-face interaction.
