Remote working 'helps green IT'

Adopting measures such as remote working are ways firms can make their IT activities more environmentally-friendly, it has been claimed.

Enterprise Ireland says that small to medium-sized companies now have access to a range of technologies which allow them to work with a greener approach.

The organisation points out: "Remote working technologies are enabling businesspeople to keep in touch while reducing travel expenses and carbon emissions."

In addition, common sense approaches such as unplugging PCs and other electrical devices, using multi-functional equipment and buying Energy Star-rated products are recommended.

Enterprise Ireland also suggested companies are being driven to greener IT practices by a desire for cost savings and changes in the concerns of the general public.

Recent research from analyst Gartner called on companies in the IT sector to increase their commitment to environmentally-friendly issues after revealing several top performers are underperforming in the area.

It also claimed that highlighting a firm's green performance can improve its business competitiveness.
