Remote working 'aids green IT'

New research has suggested remote working and video conferencing are two main ways firms intend to implement green IT practices.

The study, conducted by Vanson Bourne, discovered 70 per cent of firms have already introduced steps to make their organisation more environmentally friendly, with remote working and video conferencing used to reduce travel needs.

It also found 60 per cent of UK companies intend to lower their carbon footprint over the next 18 months, while 61 per cent of IT managers feel pressure to do this.

However, 67 per cent are not aware of how much power their data centre draws, with 45 per cent of firms not ensuring employees switch off computers at night.

David Galton-Fenzi, of Zycko Group, which commissioned the research, commented: "It is clear from the research that most organisations have made the commitment to reduce their carbon emissions but they need help implementing the required changes."

Last week, chairman of the National Outsourcing Association Martyn Hart wrote on silicon.com that IT outsourcing can result in more eco-friendly performance, as such firms tend to be more efficient than in-house solutions.
