Remote working staff 'likely to put in longer hours'

Employees are likely to be more willing to put in longer hours if they are given the option of remote working, it has been claimed.

Dr Pete Bradon, head of research at Best Companies Ltd, has told the Times that people working from outside the office are likely to put in over 45 hours per week, compared to an average of 39 hours.

As well as working more, those offered remote working are likely to feel more engaged than their office-based colleagues, he said.

Team relationships are also claimed to prosper when colleagues are allowed space for time apart, with Best Companies finding the idea they could suffer is a "misconception".

Dr Bradon explained to the newspaper: "Bear in mind these days most people spend more time with their colleagues than with their partner.

"Working from home gives them a break, which is a good thing."

Recent research by flexible working provider Regus recently found remote working can take place in a variety of locations, not just the home.

Among the more unusual places were car parks, shopping centres, and at 16 per cent, public bathrooms.
