Old data centres 'are potential weakness'

Companies who rely on aging data centres for their storage needs have been advised to invest in an upgrade or risk losing their information.

A study by Aperture Research Institute found that more than a third of data centre facilities were installed more than four years ago.

In addition, almost two thirds of the 600 facilities questioned said they had no plans to improve their systems or build a new data centre from scratch.

Steve Yellen, principal of the Aperture Research Institute, said: "The average time required to plan and build a new data centre is typically three or more years, which leads us to a worrying conclusion about the future of data centres and the impact of this lack of foresight."

With the increasing pressure on these systems due to the growing digitisation of data, firms were advised to invest in an upgrade.

However, Mr Yellen called for care to be taken when upgrading as modern technologies will not be able to slot straight into old networks as they likely require more power and improved cooling systems.
