Smartphones are increasingly becoming a security threat especially as they continue to hold more data.

According to the Home Office, 800,000 mobile phone handsets were stolen in the UK in 2006, with many of these expected to have been smartphones.

It puts users at risk of losing contact information and sensitive company and personal data such as security information, passwords and bank account information.

Jay Seaton, chief marketing operator at mobile messaging and internet provider Airwide Solutions, said smartphone users will need to be protected from theft or loss by providers and have their information secured.

He added: Operators implementing these steps to guarantee the integrity of subscriber information in the event of loss can assure current and prospective subscribers that their data will be protected.
