SME trends announced

Industry analyst Access Markets International (AMI) has announced that 2008 will be the year that mobile unified communications takes off for small and medium sized business enterprises (SMEs).

Its trend report for the year concludes that with SMEs being increasingly dependent on powerful mobile devices, 2008 will see firms using interoperable services that integrate various business communications across a number of platforms.

AMI also predict that SMEs will become more value-conscious in 2008, with tech-savvy businesses choosing higher-end services that deliver a greater return on investment (ROI).

"Ultimately businesses will begin to develop more comprehensive models for assessing the ROI benefits for such technology purchases," the report claims.

Its primary prediction is that businesses will continue spend more on IT resources, despite concerns about market stability - highlighting the importance of effective communications in today's financial environment.

The predictions follow a recent report by data analyst Gartner that also demonstrated the importance of mobility in the workforce, with 50 per cent of workers expected to be using mobile devices instead of laptops by 2012.
