New mobile tech 'could take over'

Femtocell technology could become commonplace in UK businesses in the coming years, it has been revealed. The technology is designed to provide convergence of fixed and mobile communications functionality and works by attaching low-power wireless base stations to internet lines to seamlessly allow workers to switch between mobile and fixed-telephone networks when using enabled handsets. Paul Taylor writes in the Financial Times that the technology could capitalise on the expanding market dominance of multi-function smart phones - allowing businesses to implement converged fixed and mobile communications. He adds that if the leading backers of the technology are correct, femtocells could become an integral part of business communications infrastructure. There are currently around 20 femtocell trials operating throughout Europe, with one UK operator planning to introduce the technology to business and residential clients by the beginning of 2009 after it has undertaken extensive trials planned throughout the summer.
