New agreement as business communications trend continues

Business mobile users have been targeted by computing giant IBM as the trend of providing mobile access to enterprise applications continues.

Its move to allow owners of Research in Motion (RiM) handsets to access IBM applications such as Cognos business intelligence software and Lotus Connections comes two weeks after SAP announced it is to build customer relationship management software for Blackberry phones, reports Computer World UK.

A relationship with IBM is likely to be welcomed by Blackberry makers RiM as it prepares for the entry of the iPhone into the business communications market.

Kevin Cavanaugh, vice-president of Lotus software for IBM, said the agreement is indicative of where business communications are headed.

He explained: "We think this is a trend that is happening in the industry where you’re taking enterprise applications and wanting to carry them around on a handheld as well as get them on laptops."

RiM is set to release a new Blackberry smartphone in the summer.

Access to tri-band HSPDA high-speed networks, integrated GPS and Wi-Fi, which could be used to run VoIP services, are among the expected features of the latest model.
