Mobile convergence can have big benefits for business communications, but firms need to assess what level of functionality is required to ensure streamlined mobile connectivity, one analyst asserts. Gary Kim, contributing editor at TMCnet argues that for some businesses the integration of mobile and PDA features may bring significant gains for remote workers, but that additional services as navigation devices, optical character recognition and scanner facilities are more of a hindrance to firms who do not need that level of functionality. However, in response to a recent study that found some businesses were reluctant to adopt some forms of mobile convergence technology, one analyst has said that many businesses have become dependent on core features such as one-number presence, which allows mobile devices to handle office-bound calls seamlessly while they are on the move. "Just as presence management has to be a converged layer of control over all forms of contact availability, so, too, does the next generation of mobile device have to support all interfaces for contact management and communication," claimed Art Rosenberg on Unified Communications Strategies.
